What if the Youth Leadership Academy earned a penny every time you searched the Internet? Or how about if a percentage of every purchase you made online went to support our cause? Well, now it can!

GoodSearch.com is a new Yahoo-powered search engine that donates half its advertising revenue, about a penny per search, to the charities its users designate. Use it just as you would any search engine, get quality search results from Yahoo, and watch the donations add up!

GoodShop.com is a new online shopping mall which donates up to 37 percent of each purchase to your favorite cause! Hundreds of great stores including Amazon, Target, Gap, Best Buy, ebay, Macy's and Barnes & Noble have teamed up with GoodShop and every time you place an order, you’ll be supporting your favorite cause.

Just go to www.goodsearch.com and be sure to enter Youth Leadership Academy as the charity you want to support. And, be sure to spread the word!

Stranger Danger

  Dear Parents,

Although the matters below happend on the east side of Carpentersville, I thought I would forward this information to you as a reminder to talk with your kids about stranger danger. Safety is the number one priority at WCS and we will continue to work with you regarding the safety of the children. From Bill Doran, Principal.

School District 300 leaders and area police are urging parents and children to stay alert to ?stranger danger? due to recent issues in the area. There have been three incidents in the past week in which a stranger attempted to lure a child into his car. The latest attempt occurred this morning. Police believe the incidents may be connected.

Here is the basic information on each incident:

(1) Tuesday, Oct. 20: A 9-year-old boy walking to school from his home in the 100 block of Tee Road of Carpentersville said that a man driving a light blue vehicle offered him a ride to school between 7:45 and 8:15 a.m. When the boy declined, the man continued to follow the boy to the parking lot behind 2 Pine Street. The man then got out of the car and again asked the boy if he needed a ride. The boy refused and the man drove away, police said. The suspect is described as a black man with a mustache and curly hair. He was wearing a black and white hooded sweatshirt with black pants and yellow Nike shoes. The suspect's car was described as light blue with four doors with red, yellow and green flames painted on the side.

(2) Thursday, Oct. 22: A man approached a 9-year-old girl as she collected the mail at her home on the 1800 block of Silverstone Drive in Carpentersville. The man tapped the girl on the shoulder and asked her to help him find his lost puppy. The man said he had candy in the car. The girl told the man he was not her father and ran away, police said. The suspect then drove away in a black car with rust on the bottom close to the front door. The suspect is described as a black man between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 11 inches tall, with a long gray goatee and short hair. He was wearing black jeans and a blue shirt.

(3) Today (Wednesday, Oct. 28): At about 7:35 a.m., a fourth grade student was walking to school on Alameda Drive in Carpentersville when she was approached by a man in a car. The man told the child, ?I can get you anywhere you need to go.? The student did not talk to the stranger and ran all the way to school, and police were called. The child described the stranger as a black man with short black hair and a full beard and goatee.

Again, please discuss ?stranger danger? awareness with your children, especially in light of high pedestrian traffic during Halloween. Children should run away if they are approached by a stranger and they should never go into a car of any person they do not know.

Halloween Safety Alert

Halloween Safety: Safety Alert

A few safety tips from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission can protect children who plan to go trick-or-treating this Halloween.

Treats: Warn children not to eat any treats before an adult has carefully examined them for evidence of tampering.

Flame Resistant Costumes: When purchasing a costume, masks, beards, and wigs, look for the label Flame Resistant. Although this label does not mean these items won't catch fire, it does indicate the items will resist burning and should extinguish quickly once removed from the ignition source. To minimize the risk of contact with candles or other sources of ignition, avoid costumes made with flimsy materials and outfits with big, baggy sleeves or billowing skirts.

Costume Designs: Purchase or make costumes that are light and bright enough to be clearly visible to motorists.

For greater visibility during dusk and darkness, decorate or trim costumes with reflective tape that will glow in the beam of a car's headlights. Bags or sacks should also be light colored or decorated with reflective tape. Reflective tape is usually available in hardware, bicycle, and sporting goods stores.

To easily see and be seen, children should also carry flashlights.

Costumes should be short enough to prevent children from tripping and falling.

Children should wear well-fitting, sturdy shoes . Mother' s high heels are not a good idea for safe walking.

Hats and scarfs should be tied securely to prevent them from slipping over children's eyes.

Apply a natural mask of cosmetics rather than have a child wear a loose-fitting mask that might restrict breathing or obscure vision. If a mask is used, however, make sure it fits securely and has eyeholes large enough to allow full vision.

Swords, knives, and similar costume accessories should be of soft and flexible material.

Pedestrian Safety: Young children should always be accompanied by an adult or an older, responsible child. All children should WALK, not run from house to house and use the sidewalk if available, rather than walk in the street. Children should be cautioned against running out from between parked cars, or across lawns and yards where ornaments, furniture, or clotheslines present dangers.

Choosing Safe Houses: Children should go only to homes where the residents are known and have outside lights on as a sign of welcome.
